The Passion Behind the Advocacy

Attorney Adam Burrows
|

At Burrows Law Group, our mission has always been clear: deliver personalized, results-driven legal solutions with integrity at the core. Today, we’re taking a closer look at the vision and values behind that mission by sitting down with the person who started it all—President & CEO Adam Burrows. In this candid interview, Mr. Burrows reflects on the journey of building the firm, the challenges faced along the way, and the principles that continue to guide the team in advocating for clients every day. Whether you're a long-time client or new to our story, this conversation offers a meaningful glimpse into the heart of Burrows Law Group.

1. Let’s start from the beginning—what initially drew you to the legal profession, and specifically, to family law?

Growing up, I had the unique experience of watching my father practice family law. It wasn’t just a profession to him—it was a mission. I saw how he walked with clients through their most difficult seasons, not just as a lawyer but as a trusted guide. I clerked for him during law school, and that experience shaped the core of who I am professionally. I witnessed the emotional weight clients carried and how the law—when practiced with compassion and skill—could bring clarity and stability. That early exposure didn’t just draw me to family law; it gave me a deep sense of responsibility to carry that work forward.

2. Can you share the story of how you got started in your legal career? Were there any pivotal moments or mentors who shaped your path?

My legal career started at home—literally. Clerking for my father gave me firsthand experience not only with the law itself, but with the human side of it. I learned how to interview clients, prepare for court, and—most importantly—how to listen. One case in particular stands out early in my practice: we represented a mother trying to escape an abusive relationship while protecting her child. That case opened my eyes to the depth of trust clients place in their attorney and the transformative power of family law. That moment, and many others since, have kept me grounded in this work.

3. Family law often deals with highly emotional and sensitive issues. What drives your passion for helping clients in these situations?

There’s something sacred about being invited into someone’s life when they’re at their most vulnerable. Family law isn’t just about legal outcomes—it’s about protecting children, preserving dignity, and helping people rebuild. I’m driven by the opportunity to provide structure and clarity in the middle of emotional chaos. It’s incredibly meaningful to watch a client go from feeling overwhelmed and hopeless to empowered and in control of their future. That transformation is why I keep showing up, case after case.

4. What are some of the most common misconceptions people have about family law?

A lot of people believe family law is just about “winning” in court—but that’s rarely the case. It’s not about victory in the traditional sense; it’s about resolution and forward movement. Another common misconception is that the courts are always biased toward one parent—usually the mother. In reality, the law is designed to protect the best interests of the child, and courts are increasingly mindful of fairness and shared parenting where appropriate. People also often underestimate how emotionally demanding this area of law is—for both clients and attorneys.

5. What are some of the most rewarding cases or outcomes you’ve experienced in your career so far?

The most rewarding outcomes are rarely the ones with the biggest legal victories—they’re the ones where you know you helped change a life. I’ve worked with clients who were trapped in controlling, even dangerous, relationships and helped them find freedom and safety for themselves and their children. Watching them step into a new season of peace and stability—that’s what stays with me. Those cases remind me that the work we do matters far beyond the courtroom.

6. How do you balance the legal side of family disputes with the human side—like empathy, emotion, and conflict resolution?

It’s a careful balance. Clients need both a strong advocate and a steady presence. I try to create space for clients to feel seen and heard, but also to help them think clearly and make decisions that serve their long-term well-being. Sometimes that means telling them hard truths or helping them avoid emotionally driven decisions that might backfire. Empathy doesn’t mean agreeing with every emotion—it means guiding clients through those emotions toward a better outcome.

7. Have there been significant changes or trends in family law that you’ve noticed over the past few years? How have they affected your practice?

Absolutely. One of the biggest shifts is the increasing emphasis on alternative dispute resolution—especially mediation and collaborative law. Courts are encouraging families to resolve matters outside of litigation when possible, and that’s often a better path. I’ve also seen greater awareness around mental health and emotional abuse—terms like narcissistic abuse and coercive control are finally getting the attention they deserve in courtrooms. These changes have pushed us as practitioners to think more holistically and to bring in outside professionals when needed.

8. What advice would you give to someone considering a career in family law?

Know that this is not a job you can do halfway. It requires emotional intelligence, resilience, and a deep sense of purpose. Clients will look to you during the worst moments of their lives, and how you show up matters. If you’re driven by both advocacy and compassion, and you’re willing to carry emotional weight with integrity, this can be one of the most rewarding areas of law. But go into it with clear boundaries and a strong support system—you can’t pour from an empty cup.

As our conversation with Mr. Burrows comes to a close, one thing is clear: Burrows Law Group was built not just on legal experience, but on a deep commitment to people—clients, colleagues, and community alike. The values that sparked the founding of the firm still drive its work today: trust, transparency, and tireless advocacy. We’re proud to continue that legacy with every case we take on and every client we serve.
